New Mexico Woman Sues Watchtower for Abuse

Monica Jaramillo has waited long enough to speak out about the abuse she suffered at the hands of a Jehovah’s Witness elder when she was an 8-year old child. To prove that point, Jaramillo has filed a lawsuit against the Los Lunas, New Mexico Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses and the person who abused her. Court documents identify the accused as “Michael Brunner.”

Surprisingly, Jaramillo alleges in her lawsuit that the man in question actually committed his crime against her in the state of Indiana. Not only that, but she claims he also raped her mother around that same time.

Her mother, Vicky Davis, explained that she was told not to report the crimes to the authorities, but to just keep them quiet and let the elders within the Kingdom Hall take care of the problem.

Although there have been scores of lawsuits filed against the Watchtower and local congregations that meet in Kingdom Halls, the announced lawsuit is the first filed in New Mexico. California attorney Irwin Zalkin has filed the lawsuit on the plaintiffs’ behalf. Ms. Jaramillo is also being represented by a local attorney, Terrence Revo. According to him, this may be just the beginning of many cases being filed – including some in Los Lunas.
