Jehovah’s Witnesses sent a court glowing character references for Kelly Jane Richards, 36, from Mountain Ash, South Wales who pled guilty to having sex with a 15 year-old boy.
Describing her interaction with the boy between October and December 2012, Judge Richard Twomlow at Merthyr Tydfil Crown Court, said: ‘There was grooming, a significant disparity in age, specific targeting of a vulnerable child and she told him not to say anything which is a further aggravating factor.’
Prosecutor Roger Griffiths told the court the pair had sex after Richards had an argument with her husband, Paul.
He said: “Mrs Richards was in her bedroom crying and [the boy] went into the room to comfort her.”
“Mrs Richards began kissing him and it led to full sexual intercourse.”
‘Mrs Richards was in her nightie, the boy was in his clothes – she was astride him. It was over very quickly,’ prosecutor Roger Griffiths said.
The Court was told Richards had told the boy: “Don’t tell anyone because I might get done for this“.
Despite pleading guilty, Richards walked free from court after admitting unlawful sexual activity with a child.
Judge Richard Twomlow told Richards her victim was “vulnerable” and she had “developed a strong influence over him”.
He told her: “Despite the fact you knew his age you had sexual intercourse with him at your home.”
“That happened after a period of what might be described as grooming.
When you were arrested you denied any sexual relationship.
You did plead guilty, although on the day of your trial.”
Judge Twomlow told Richards he had decided “with some hesitation” not to send the mother-of-two to jail.
Richards was sentenced to a two-year suspended jail term and a sexual offences prevention order.
The court order prevents her from contacting boys under the age of the 16. She will have to sign on to the sex offenders register for 10 years.
The sexual relationship with the child lasted 3 months after meeting as fellow Jehovah’s Witnesses. It was only uncovered after the boy’s suspicious mother placed a tape recorder in her son’s bedroom to discover why he had begun hiding his mobile phone and spending so much time staying with Richards.
The pair then began talking on the phone and over Facebook. When the boy’s housebound mother became concerned about their relationship she confiscated his phone, but Richards quickly replaced the sim card, the court heard.
‘During their relationship she gave him alcohol and asked him to give her massages.
‘She said she loved him,‘ added Mr Griffith.
“I give you credit for pleading guilty, your good character and that you have show some remorse.”
“If you had not pleaded guilty the sentence would have been three years in prison,” he said.
A neighbour said: “It is incredible that (her husband) Paul is sticking with her after what she has done. Having sex with an underage boy like that is disgusting.“
